Nevado Pisco Climb

The Nevado Pisco Climb is an excellent high-Andean mountaineering adventure for travelers looking to reach a classic 6,000-meter peak in the Cordillera Blanca. With its relatively straightforward route, Nevado Pisco (5,752 m) is ideal for climbers seeking their first experience at extreme altitude.

The expedition begins from Huaraz, heading north through the Callejón de Huaylas to Cebolla Pampa, where the approach hike to Pisco Base Camp starts. The climb to the summit begins in the early hours of the morning, ascending across rocky terrain, moraines, and glacier sections under the guidance of experienced mountain guides and using proper mountaineering equipment.

From the summit, climbers are rewarded with an impressive 360° panoramic view of the most iconic peaks of the Cordillera Blanca, including Huascarán (North and South), Huandoy, Chacraraju, Chopicalqui, Artesonraju, Alpamayo, Caraz, and many more — making the Nevado Pisco Climb an unforgettable high-altitude experience.

TIPS:

  • Due to the high altitude of the Nevado Pisco climb, we strongly recommend proper acclimatization before this expedition, especially if you have just arrived in Huaraz.

  • Nevado Pisco reaches an altitude of approximately 5,752 m / 18,871 ft and offers a classic high-mountain ascent in the Cordillera Blanca.

Itinerary

DAY 1: HUARAZ 3,100 m.a.s.l. – YUNGAY – CEBOLLA PAMPA 3,900 m.a.s.l. – PISCO BASE CAMP 4,700 m.a.s.l.

Departure: 7:00 AM

We depart from the city of Huaraz early in the morning, picking up each participant from their respective hotels. We then head north of Huaraz through the Callejón de Huaylas, passing through Carhuaz and Yungay.

From Yungay, we continue east through the villages of Umacchuco, where we stop for breakfast at local restaurants, and then proceed to the Huascarán National Park checkpoint. We pass by the Llanganuco Lakes (3,850 m.a.s.l.), Chinancocha and Orconcocha, and finally arrive at Cebolla Pampa.

At Cebolla Pampa, we begin our hike to Pisco Base Camp, which takes approximately 3 to 4 hours.

Upon arrival, we set up camp and organize the camping equipment. We then have a mountaineering briefing and instruction on the proper use of mountaineering equipment, followed by dinner and rest.

DAY 2: PISCO BASE CAMP 4,700 m.a.s.l. – PISCO SUMMIT 5,752 m.a.s.l. – PISCO BASE CAMP 4,700 m.a.s.l.

Breakfast: 12:00 AM
Departure: 12:30 AM
Start of the glacier: 2:30 AM
Summit: Sunrise at the summit of Mount Pisco (5,752 m.a.s.l.) – 6:30 AM
Pisco Base Camp: Return to camp at 11:00 AM

After a light breakfast, we begin our adventure at 12:30 AM. We start the ascent following a series of switchbacks, pass a small flat section, and then descend a short vertical section where we find an approximately 10-meter chain. At this point, the guide assists us with a rope to ensure greater safety, using two safety points.

We continue over rocky terrain and moraines until reaching the start of the glacier at 2:30 AM. Here, we put on our crampons and rope up to continue the ascent. We proceed across the glacier, overcoming flat sections and small ice walls, until finally reaching our objective: the summit of Mount Pisco (5,752 m.a.s.l.).

From the summit, we enjoy an impressive 360° panoramic view, observing the 6,000-meter and 5,000-meter peaks such as Chacraraju, Huandoy, Huascarán (North and South), Chopicalqui, Artesonraju, Caraz, Alpamayo, Pirámide de Garcilaso, and Contrahierbas.

After taking photos and videos, we descend back to Pisco Base Camp.

DAY 3: PISCO BASE CAMP – CEBOLLA PAMPA – YUNGAY – HUARAZ

Breakfast: 9:00 AM
Departure: 10:00 AM
End of the tour: Huaraz, 3:00 PM

After a long rest, we have breakfast at 8:30 AM and then descend to Cebollapampa, where our transportation will be waiting for us. From there, we return to Huaraz, finishing the tour around 4:00 to 5:00 PM.
